Our 120 days in South America

A glimpse of what countries can offer over 120 Days. We started our trip in Buenos Aires, Argentina and finished in Lima, Peru.

Day 1 – Day 5 Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires

Day 1 Buenos Aires
We arrived in Buenos Aires, checked in Sabatico Traveller Hostel and visited 25th de Mayo Plaza.
Day 2 Buenos Aires
Took part in the free walking tour and visited Boca for 12th man celebrations. At night we returned to our hostel for a BBQ.
Day 3 Buenos Aires
It was Democracy Day – Argentina was 31 years a Republic, so we joined the celebrations.

Day 4 Buenos Aires
We visited Recoleta after we made our 1st blue dollar exchange. It was also the day of the football final Racing Club v Godoy Cruz where the streets filled with fans after the game.
Day 5 Buenos Aires – We took the bus to Rosario approx 2 hours and arrived late so we ate steak and chips in a local greasy spoon.

Day 6 Rosario
We made our way in a tax to a La Florida private beach. Coming home we walked the 9km back to the city no taxis or buses were in sight.
Day 7 Rosario
Our 2nd Blue dollar exchange took place on the main street in Rosario. We took bus to Mendoza at 6pm, not speaking a word of Spanish we were helped by Jehovah's Witnesses to get our overnight bus.

Day 8 – Day 18 Mendoza & Bariloche

Day 8 Mendoza
We arrived in Mendoza early morning and checked into Chill Inn Hostel. We planned our days ahead. Later that day we took the wine tour and had dinner in Roots Restaraunt!
Day 9 Mendoza
Early start rafting and zip lining for the whole day. Later we ate dinner at Linda's cafe on Avenida Colon.

Day 10 Mendoza
We partook in a horse riding tour and Bbq with Los Pingos, where we met plenty of European backpackers (we met them all the way through our backpacking travels).
Day 11 Mendoza Sunday
Mendoza closes so visited 4 plaza’s in Mendoza before taking the overnight bus to Bariloche at 6pm.
Day 12 Bariloche
We arrived in Bariloche 17hours later, exhausted checked into Pudu Hostel – for the first time we need to do laundry and buy food for dinner.
Day 13 Bariloche
We took the bus to Cerro Campinario- got the chairlift and later climbed Cerro Baha.
Day 14 Bariloche
(Christmas Eve) moved to Universal Travellers Lodge, Christmas Eve dinner with the Hostel staff and guests.
Day 15 Bariloche
It was Christmas Day, climbed some of Cerro Cathedral, (no Christmas Turkey this year)! After the fireworks, we went to a local bar with the entire hostel guests and staff.
Day 16 Bariloche
It was St. Stevens Day/Boxing day, ate steak and chips with egg on top. Couldn't extend our stay in Universals travellers Lodge so we checked into Hostel 41 Below.
Day 17 Bariloche
We waited for a bus for 1.5 hours to get to Cerro Catedral (impossible) - decided instead go on an adventure to Laguna Baha Bahia.
Day 18 Bariloche
We had an early start to El Calafate, 30-hour bus drive.

Day 19 – Day 26 El Calafate & El Chalten

Day 19 El Calafate
We stayed in a Hospedajede which was family run. It was a Spanish only speaking hostel, spent the afternoon in Laguna Nimez Reserve.
Day 20 El Calafate
We visited Perito Moreno Glacier (amazing), seen a small bird been eaten by a hawk, got the late bus to El Chalten & managed to get a dorm in Condors Hi Hostel.
Day 21 El Chalten
It was New Year's Eve started a 3-day trek to Cerro Torres.
Day 22 El Chalten
It was New Year's Day trekked 9km from Cerro Torres to Fitz Roy, climbed Fitz Roy to get the evening sun (Best New Years Day ever!).

Day 23 El Chalten
We trekked along Rio Blanco and through boulders to see Glacier Piedras Blancas. We made the long trek back to El Chalten Villiage where we rewarded ourselves with a steak dinner and shower.
Day 24 El Chalten
We needed to take the bus back El Calafate (because of lack of ATM or Chip and Pin payments) arrived in El Calafate late, checked into the (expensive for backpackers) Cabanas.
Day 25 El Calafate
We checked into Hospedaje Los Nietos with a private apartment. We spent the day recovering some more from trekking and traveling. Day of Rest!
Day 26 El Chalten
We took the bus to Los Antiguos at 8am, switched buses in the middle of a highway as part of the same company.
Day 27 Los Antiguos
We made our first border crossing into Chile Chico, no there was no ATMs in Chile Chico or Los Antiguos, almost didn't eat but managed to find Blue Dollar Exchange back in Los Antiguos. Apparently, this happens to a lot of backpackers.
Day 28 Los Antiguos
We left for Bariloche on a freebie from the bus company until we arrived back in Bariloche. Checked into Backpackers Hostel, booking.com messed up reservation –the Hostel manager was helpful and let us sleep on a mattress in a dorm.
Day 29 Bariloche
Finally left Argentina for Osorno Chile at 9am. We crossed the border into Chile for the 2nd time.

Day 27 – Day 29 Los Antiguos & Bariloche

Day 27 Los Antiguos – We made our first border crossing into Chile Chico, no there was no ATMs in Chile Chico or Los Antiguos, almost didn't eat but managed to find Blue Dollar Exchange back in Los Antiguos. Apparently, this happens to a lot of backpackers.

Day 28 Los Antiguos – We left for Bariloche on a freebie from the bus company until we arrived back in Bariloche. Checked into Backpackers Hostel, booking.com messed up reservation –the Hostel manager was helpful and let us sleep on a mattress in a dorm.
Day 29 Bariloche – Finally left Argentina for Osorno Chile at 9am. We crossed the border into Chile for the 2nd time.

Day 29 – Day 34 Osorno & Pucon

It took us approx 5 hours to get to Osorno, including crossing the border
Day 30 Osorno
We relaxed in the Plaza, did some essential shopping, left for Pucon at 6pm arrived at approx 10pm. We checked into Hostel Pucon Sur.
Day 31 Pucon
We organised a tour that included the flower market, waterfall, beach and thermal baths. Later went on a pub crawl with mixture of travellers, (In a drunken state showed Chileans how to Irish dance)
Day 32 Pucon
Ironman took place in Pucon so went to the beach on Pucon Lakeshore.
Day 33 Pucon
We climbed Villarica Volcano and had a beer with all the guides afterwards.
Day 34 Pucon
We went canyoning which was  our last excursion in Pucon. We left for the night bus to Santiago, departed at 10pm.

Day 34 – Day 42 Santiago & Valparaiso

Day 35 Santiago
We arrived early morning and checked into Dominico Hostel while later we took the Finicular up San Christabal hill in Bellavista.
Day 36 Santiago
We visited the and Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino,  afterwards we made our way through the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. Later our Chilean friend from Pucon took us to a local Irish bar.
Day 37 Santiago
We visited Santiago Zoo, seen the magnificent Condors for the first time.
Day 38 Santiago
We took the “free” tour4tips trip of Santiago.
Day 39 Santiago
It was Sunday everywhere closed. That evening we caught a bus to Valparaiso at 6pm.
Day 40 Valparaiso
We walked the tour4tips tour at 3pm. We went on a wine tasting evening. Once it finished backpackers at the wine tasting evenings drank with locals in Cummings Plaza.
Day 41 Valparaiso
We walked through the food markets and did some essential shopping.
Day 42 Valparaiso
Our last day in Valparaiso was spent in Vina Del Mar later we dined at Mastadonte Restaurant at the bottom of Cummings Street. We left for La Serena at 9.30pm.

Day 43 – Day 49 La Serena and San Pedro

We arrived in La Serena at 5am. We couldn’t leave the bus terminal until dawn. After some sleep went surfing in the afternoon.
Day 44 La Serena
We chilled in the hostel most of the day, went to the beach to do some beach art.
Day 45 La Serena
La Serena was only a stopover, it was time to head north to San Pedro.
Day 46 San Pedro
We arrived in San Pedro. Altitude sickness struck.
Day 47 San Pedro
We ventured Sand boarding but was cut short because of a thunderstorm so we ended up in a local bar for drinks.
Day 48 San Pedro
We moved hostels because the oven/kitchen was out of order. We finished the day star- gazing.
Day 49 San Pedro
We decided to go sand boarding again but this time earlier so we rented bikes and boards and did it ourselves this time.

Day 50 –

Bolivia

Day 50 San Pedro – It was time to leave San Pedro so we crossed the Chilean/Bolivian Border, on 3-day tour to Salar de Uyuni , 6 of us in the same jeep, started with thermals, Laguna Verde, 2nd thunder storm,
Day 51 Uyuni – It snowed in the morning, but seen rock formations, then rained a lot in the afternoon.

Day 50 – Day 65 Uynui & Sucre

It snowed in the morning, but seen rock formations, then rained a lot in the afternoon.
Day 52 Uynui
Our Last day of the tour, we took our cheesy photos in Salar de Uyuni and had drinks with new friends from the tour. We left for Sucre at 10pm.
Day 53 Sucre
We arrived in Sucre at 6.30am, watched the Super Bowl in Joyride Cafe while enjoying some local beer.
Day 54 Sucre
We started in search of a school for Spanish lessons.
Day 55 Sucre
We started Spanish lessons.
Day 56 Sucre
It was Comrades Day, 2nd day of Spanish! After Spanish, we went for a drink in the Florin.
Day 57 Sucre
We studied Spanish all day watched "even in the rain" after class. (Great movie)
Day 58 Sucre
We moved hostels to the Celtic Cross, went to the market after class, met the owner of Celtic Cross in the Florin.
Day 59 Sucre
Our last class of Spanish but the first day of Carnival. We booked a trek with our Swiss friends we met in Mendoza.
Day 60 Sucre
We had an early 6.30am start. The 1st day of trekking we walked under a waterfall in Maragua crater. There was 10 of us + guide on the trek. There was a thunderstorm over the crater at night.
Day 61 Sucre
The 2nd day of the trek, we visited the dinosaur footprints and ate lunch in an old cottage on the side of the mountain. We walked to the next town. By the end of the day, everyone was sore and tired.
Day 62 Sucre
The next morning we took the bus back to Sucre and finished the trip in Condors Cafe.
Day 63 Sucre
It was ladies night in Sucre so we went to Kutler Berlin for drinks and celebrations. We topped the Berlin Wall drinking chart for Ireland.
Day 64 Sucre
Still recovering from the Trek we rested all day and had BBQ in Celtic Cross Hostel.
Day 65 Sucre
Valentine’s Day and last day in Sucre. We watched Ireland play France in the Rugby before getting the overnight bus to La Paz.

Day 66 – Day 69 La Paz & Rurrenabaque

Day 66 La Paz
We arrived in la Paz to a grim city & checked into Wild Rover. We ate dinner in a Mexican where we dined with an Irish couple we met in Sucre.
Day 67 La Paz
We explored options for Death Road.
Day 68 La Paz
We booked Death Road and Rurrenabaque. We took a stroll to feed the birds at Plaza Murillo.
Day 69 La Paz
It was an early start at 6 to cycle Death Road. I fell off the bike lucky escape with only a few scratches. Graham took the option to go zip lining. We finished the trip with lunch in La Serde Verde Animal refuge.

Day 70 – Day 69 La Paz & Copacabana

Our flight was at 6.30am to Rurrenabaque, then we took a 3 hour jeep ride, a 2 hour boat trip to our cabins. In the evening we watched the sunset and our first night in the Amazon listening to nature.
Day 71 Rurrenabaque
We went in search of pink dolphins and jumped in to swim with them. At night looked for the caimans.
Day 72 Rurrenabaque
We had an early morning trip to watch the sunrise and listen to the Jungles alarm clock, the Howler monkey. Before lunch we went piranha fishing. Our trip finished after lunch where we made our way back to Rurrenabaque.
Day 73 Rurrenabaque
We Got the flight back to La Paz at 4pm, met a couple in search of a Coke bar.
Day 74 La Paz
We were affected by the altitude, so we slept it off.
Day 75 Copacabana
We left La Paz at 6am taking the Bolivia Hop to Copacabana and visited Isla del Sol at 1pm.

Day 76 – Day 81 Puno & Cusco

Day 76 Puno
We arrived in Puno checked into the wrong hostel with other travelers.
Day 77 Puno
We went on a boat tour to the Floating Islands at 6am, departed Puno at 9am on the Peru Hop arrived in Cusco at 5pm. Checked into Inkaspacha in Cusco.
Day 78 Cusco
We took a walk around Cusco, ate in Nortons bar & went to the gym to prepare for trekking.
Day 79 Cusco
Went to the gym again early morning, inquired about Salkantay tour and hung out with some friends.
Day 80 Cusco
We went to the gym once more to prepare our bodies for our trek. Later we booked 5-day trek to Salkantay that finished with a climb to Machu Picchu with our Swiss friends.
Day 81 Cusco
We moved to Dragon Fly Hostel, visited in the San Pedro Markets and prepared for our trip to Salkantay.

Day 81 – Day 85 Puno & Cusco

Day 82 Cusco
Day 1 of trek,: We departed for our trek at 5am.We were introduced to our guide and new ”family” for the next 5 days. It started with a 3hour trek. After lunch, we visited mountain with the lake. We all were in bed at 8.30 after a good nutritious meal.
Day 83 Cusco
Day 2 of trek: We trekked 3 hours uphill to summit, of Salkantay Mountain, 2 hours downhill to a warm healthy lunch. The day finished with another 3 hours through the rainforest and a good meal.

Day 82 – Day 86 Salkantay/Machu Picchu Trek

Day 82 Cusco Day 1 of Machu Picchu Trek.We departed at 5am in a mini bus out of Cusco town. We were introduced to our guide and new ”family” for the next 5 days. It started with a 3hour morning trek. After lunch, we visited mountain with the lake. We all were in bed at 8.30 after a good nutritious meal.

Day 83 CuscoDay 2 of Salkantay/Machu Picchu Trek. 
We trekked 3 hours uphill to the summit of Salkantay Mountain, 2 hours downhill to a warm healthy lunch. The day finished with another 3 hours through the rainforest and a good meal.
Day 84 Cusco
Day 3 of Salkantay/Machu Picchu Trek.
The start of the trek we passed a waterfall and walked 6 hours trek downhill to eat lunch by a river. After, we took the bus to camp and relaxed at the hot springs with an evening campfire party.
Day 85 Cusco
Day 4 of Salkantay/Machu Picchu Trek.
The campfire party took its toll on our bodies and we struggled in the morning stretch. Our days started with 3 hours trek up a train line to Agua Calientes. Checked into our hostel at noon for a nice long hot shower before enjoying a delightful dinner.
Day 86 Cusco
Day 5 of Salkantay/Machu Picchu Trek.
We had an early start at 4am to climb Machu Picchu archaeology site, said goodbye to Berly our guide, before trekking to the summit, of Machu Picchu Mountain. We all took the train bus back to Cusco and arrived in our Dragon fly about 11pm.

Day 87 – Day 92 Cusco

We met “the family” for pancakes and hot chocolate as it was our last day we would all be together.
Day 88 Cusco
We got a massage and recovered from the trekking.
Day 89 Cusco
Went on the city free walking tour to learn about the Incas and TuPac.
Day 90 Cusco
We spent the day at the Internet cafe. It rained heavily at night.
Day 91 Cusco
We Checked into Kokopelli and had lunch in Jacks cafe.
Day 92 Cusco
It was our final day in Cusco so we went to San Pedro indoor market, took the city bus tour, then boarded the night bus, to Arequipa at 8pm.

Day 93 – Day 100 Arequipa

We checked into Mercederes Backpackers Hostel at 8am. We devoured a healthy fruit breakfast and toasted sandwich, in Fruta. We finished the day off by going to see a movie in the Shopping centre.
Day 94 Arequipa
We went on the free walking tour, ate dinner in Dobres Restaurant and went to nightclub Frogs.
Day 95 Arequipa
It was Mothers Day in Ireland and UK so we called our mother’s for a chat. We ate dinner in roof top restaurant with blankets wrapped around us. A great view of Misti and Arequipa.
Day 96 Arequipa
Happy to relax we went to see Chappie, a new movie out.
Day 97 Arequipa
It was  St. Patrick's Day -  We ate lunch and partied ‘til 3am at the Wild Rover Hostel – met a LOT of Irish people.
Day 98 Arequipa
We chilled at the hostel too tired to do anything else.
Day 99 Arequipa
We went to the fruit and food market, ate in Argentinian grill, sent gifts home to Ireland with Serpost. It was a simple and easy process.

Day 100 – Day 108 Colca Canyon Valley & Arequipa

We took a bus tour to the Colca Canyon Valley, went to the hot springs and finished the night with traditional Peruvian evening.

Day 101 Colca Canyon Valley
We visited the Condor Mirador, alas no condors just fog. The bus driver stopped down the hill for another view and as we stepped off the bus a Condor flew over our heads. Arriving back in the Arequipa at 7pm.
Day 102 Arequipa
We ate lunch Argentinian grill and dinner at Turkish restaurant and evening coffees at Capriccio – we just ate all day.
Day 103 Arequipa
We checked into to Los Andes bed and breakfast for a change of scenery.
Day 104 Arequipa
We checked out of Los Andes bed and Breakfast, tried to get a Bus to Lima but there was a landslide so we were stuck in Arequipa! We checked into Wild Rover Hostel.
Day 105 Arequipa
We went to the Internet café all day, had drinks in the Wild Rover.
Day 106 Arequipa
We chilled at the hostel and waited for the buses to start back on the roads again.
Day 107 Arequipa
We ate in Dobres (again), went to a club with a group from hostel.
Day 108 Arequipa
We booked our flight to Lima, needed to get out of Arequipa ASAP – no access to Nazca so we flew direct to Lima.

Day 109 – Day 110 Lima

We arrived in Lima, stayed in Mana Hostel, and finished our evening with a visit to Kitty Park.

We thought we found an Irish Bar, Houlihan's, we left feeling a little disappointed as it wasn’t a true Irish bar.
Day 110 Lima
We strolled to Larcomar, a shopping mall in the cliff in Miraflores.

Day 111 – Day 113

Day 111 Huarez
We took the bus to Huarez and stayed in the Alps Huarez Hostel.

Day 112 Huarez
We went to see the Glacier in the National Park, at high altitude again so our heavy breathing was back.
Day 113 Huarez

We trekked to Laguna 69 in Cordilla Blanca, and took an overnight bus back to Lima.

Day 114 – Day 120 Lima

Day 114 Lima
Arriving in Miraflores early morning we checked into Pirawana. That evening we hung out with our new friends we met in the dorm.
Day 115 Lima
We investigated paragliding, had strange encounter with a guy from the Bahamas back at Houlihans
Day 116 Lima
Final few days of our trip so we soaked it up relaxing in Kitty Park.
Day 117 Lima
Early morning rise to go surfing and paragliding, our final day of adventure sports
Day 118 Lima
We prepared for Canada, said our goodbyes and took bus to the airport (but we didn't have the ESTA from US immigration so missed flight back to Pirawana Hostel)
Day 119 Lima
Unexpected extra day in Lima, final visit to Kitty Park to hang out with the cats, said final-final goodbyes to our Scottish friend.
Day 120
We Left Peru at 1am, next stop for Atlanta with an onward flight to Toronto.
